Work Experience - Darryl Worbey Studios

I was again working with Darryl yesterday in his workshop.

I’ve worked there a couple of times, and I love how just being in the workshop and watching the puppets gives me a great insight into the industry.

At the moment i’ve been given the task to make the arms for these re- occurring ventriloquist puppets :)

I’m having fun and hoping to fit more and more experience into this summer!

The Deer

Inspiration was also taken from ” The Lion King ” and ” Warhorse ” itself.

The willow sticks were fabricated using a stretchy net fabric in different shades of brown. We wanted to keep with the light and elegant feel of a majestic deer.

The Deer Puppet

The Puppet Project the last project of the year. A 10 week Project, and the theme Noah’s Ark. I had a brilliant partner to work with on this project.

A lot of learning was involved within the making of this project.. My Partner Sion and I decided almost immediately we wanted to take inspiration from Warhorse. We wanted to create a stylized yet elegant realistic look deer. We wanted the deer to still capture emotion and we wanted many of the components moving.

This is why I adore and love my course.. it’s perfectly suited to me as was this project. We sculpted deer heads which we were intially to create create out of plastazote and fabricate.. we steered away from this idea, and the whole puppet was made out of willow sticks.

If you’re not familiar with willow sticks, you usually create a template first. In our case we used nails and nailed various shapes onto mdf, such as ring, flat hoove shapes etc. The willow is soaked for a couple of hours, this allows it to become flexible when damp. You manipulate it into the shape you would like and secure. In our case we used brown tape, a new find and very secure. Now when the willow dries is dries hard solid.. and is a very strong material.

In the end we has our legs moving on pivots, using the movement of our own legs, my tail would move when i pushed my own head forward as it was attached to a fishing line and the ears moved using a string device.

Replica Project

The Replica Project was the first Project we were given at the start of my course.

Here we were asked to replicate a toy by either x6, x8 or x10 larger.

I decided to go for the x10 largest scale possible. This toy was purchased at “the entertainer” and I call them the wooden blocks. They are small brightly coloured blocks which have a thin elastic running through the middle allowign you to create different shapes with them.

I then had to replicate this toy. I used a hardwood sandwiching pieces together to create 13 duplicate blocks. the space in between cut using a band saw and then sanded to perfection. Bungee used in comparison to the thin elastic the original toy had.

We were then asked to create a professional looking film poster using Photoshop CS4 after a couple of Photography classes in the studio. “Alone” is what screamed out to me when I selected this photo. And therefore Alone is what it would be.

I managed to get me a 2:1 for this Project which I was very proud about, but it’s always worth aiming higher!

I don’t quite know what it is exactly about old people, that makes them soo much more fun to draw. Old and fat people I always say, it’s them rolls, them wrinkles, the depth and the line. There’s just soo much more going on.. complex but fun.

Paint With Your Heart

This has to be one of my all time favourite paintings. When painting this I remember being in such a relaxed mood. A peaceful content mood and i think that’s what easedme into painting. I usually fear away from painting, and since my dad is a Painter.. I should be expressing exactly how I feel on paper more.

Drawing

So I tried my hand at drawing my Grandma.. Portraits fascinate me as does the face. I could stare at the men working in picaddily circus drawing portrait after portrait for hours.

I also tried to draw a figure from the V&A, but my tutor felt it to decorative. I agree and there are many things wrong with it. The left hand should be longer, the head smaller and the legs longer .. but I’ll have to keep practicing.

London College Of Fashion Finals

This was some of the work I produced last year whilst on my Foundation Diploma course in Art and Design. A one year course designed and developed to help build on your skill and talent. It helps you build on your portfolio and provides you with more experience within many fields. It was only at the end of the year did I fully understand what Technical Arts and Special Effects was. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and what I was good at. I wanted to make, I wanted to create, just like our adoring Neil Buchannan, regardless of how young I was when I used to watch him, he was always my inspiration! It was then my tutor put a course to what I wanted to become.

Collar

Some of my first work was making the collar, inspiration derived from my all time favourite book “a child called it” by Dave Pelzer. Constraint, restriction, shame, force etc were of inspiration.

Gasmask

The Gasmask symbolizing connection, originally inspiration started from a lobster and it’s ability to shed it’s shell. Here I could visually see, costume was not the route for me, it was more making, more sculpting in 3D. As much as I adore making I also love sketchbooking and texture, working with fabrics and the sewing machine brings me great satisfaction.

I managed to get myself a DISTINCTION for my Foundation Diploma.. which i was completely ecstatic about. It opened more doors, opening up more opportunities my way!

Here i was just playing around with Chavant Clay - beautiful clay.

I was creating sample of textures using latex to see what I would end up with. Brilliant mask techniques. I also found a user called ” brickintheyard ” on youtube, amazing life casting techniques - how to make masks - how to use alginates - how to sculpt.. everything!

Casting

Another fascination of mine lies in Life Casting. A girl in my class was showing me photos of these plaster casts she had made of her hands last year whilst I was studying my Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. I was soo fascinated with the work I went to Tiranti in London and purchased some alginate, plaster bandages and terracotta cast with iron.

My brave model here in Aanand Ewins. This was me having a bit of fun getting used to the alginate setting times. A bald cap was also made using scotch tape - brilliant idea.

Makeup Me

Here is some of my own makeup work on me. The first.. the infamous anime look. This was created to compete in a makeup contest on Youtube. The eyes have been drawn onto the eyelids, I found posing with your eyes is really not an easy task.

The second photo.. aging makeup. Here I used and abused my skills on contouring. aged by 40+ years I reckon. Using a concealer palette, smudger brushes and plenty of eyeliner.

Much of my interest lies within makeup. The wonders and beauty of makeup baffles me. I see it as a painting created on the skin, an illusion, a clever insight into the world of surrealism.

Here I worked with twin models; Deena Gadhia & Davina Gadhia for a photoshoot. Makeup was done by myself; I was given the opportunity to create a look I felt was modern and a bit wacky and this is what I ended up with. The gems had to add that bit of sparkle of course.

Wings

These are the wings I made for my Alevel: Textiles as part of our Greek Mythology Project. The inspiration behind these wings was the story of Daedalus and Icarus.

I chose to make the wings out paper used from many bought charity books. they have then been layered in triangle forms, one upon another to give a feather like appearance. The glue gun melt and tarnished appearance is used to recreate the aesthetic appeal of Icarus’s wings.

Furthermore a Calico steel boned corset has also been made and layered using smaller paper triangles, this was to ensure blending of the costume.

The arm bands allow me to bring the wings forward and push them back as I please for movement.
